The ‘American Idol’ alum can’t hold back her tears as she is treated to a birthday cake and a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday to You’ by her co-stars Taraji P. Henson and Danielle Brooks as well as Oprah Winfrey.
AceShowbiz –Fantasia Barrino has shed tears of joy on her special day. After she turned 39 years old on Friday, June 30, she was treated to a sweet surprise by her “The Color Purple” co-stars with a little help from Oprah Winfrey, who starred in the 1985 version.
The former “American Idol” winner received the special treatment during Essence Festival, which has been taking place from June 29 until July 3. In a video shared on Fantasia and Oprah’s Instagram pages, Fantasia looked emotional as Taraji P. Henson and Danielle Brooks presented her with a birthday cake while singing “Happy Birthday to You”.
Fantasia was visibly moved to tears as she sang along with the crowd, before she turned to mouth “Thank you” to Oprah and hugged the TV mogul. “We love you,” someone was heard shouting to the birthday girl, before she blew the candles.
“@tasiasword, our Celie in the new @thecolorpurple, turned 39 today-so we had to celebrate it while part of the Purple family is at @essencefest @essence,” Oprah captioned the video.
Fans love to see the sweet moment shared by those ladies in the room. They quickly flooded the comments section with gushing responses as one stated, “I LOVE SEEING BLACK WOMEN CELEBRATING ESCH OTHER!!!”
Another wrote, “Nothing like seeing Black beautiful women, celebrating another sister happy birthday.” A third follower echoed the sentiment, “Love to see these beautiful Black women living their best lives!Special shout out to the Queen @oprah for helping to pave the way. WEAR YOUR KROWN ladies!”
“This brought me to tears,” another user admitted, before adding, “I love when WOMEN gather and LOVE on one another [sic] Happy Birthday @tasiasword.” Meanwhile, someone else shared a birthday wish for Fantasia as penning, “Happy Birthday Tasia @tasiasword!! So happy for everything that’s about to happen for you.”
Fantasia stars as Celie Harris-Johnson opposite Taraji, who portrays Shug Avery, and Danielle, who plays Sofia, in Blitz Bazawule’s musical adaptation of the 1982 novel of the same name. Oprah, meanwhile, starred in the 1985 film directed by Steven Spielberg and serves as producer for the upcoming movie.
