James Martin, 48, admitted working on his self-titled cooking show had been a “learning curve” for the chef following his departure from Saturday Kitchen in 2016. The TV star has addressed fronting his own programme after he was questioned by his pal and radio broadcaster Chris Evans about the viewing figures.
Since James’ cooking debut on ITV, the show has continued to go from strength to strength.
The chef was asked if he had a contract with the network for as long as he wants following the show’s success.
It comes as James reflected on his time hosting his programme as he admitted it had been a “learning curve” for him.
Speaking on Virgin Radio, the ITV favourite revealed he got a message from the bosses thanking him for keeping viewers entertained.
Chris asked: “People have got contracts for as long as they want. Is this a new ITV thing?
“Have you got an as long as you want contract?”
James replied: “I don’t know about all that. But last Saturday, the viewing figures were very, very good.
“I don’t really look at that. I look at the shows.”
He went on: “But I got a text message from one of the big bosses at ITV, thanking me on Sunday.
“I knew it would take a fair way for people to find you and to see it because ITV has never really had food on the network before.
“So they had quite a lot of faith in me and they said they would like me to push the food forward on the weekend.”
James added: “[The show’s] had great progress and has been a big learning curve. It’s also been a fresh start, something new and something to get your teeth into.”

“And because it’s filmed at my house a lot of people don’t know that.”
He concluded: “If you enjoy making it then it should show on-screen.”
The star began hosting James Martin’s Saturday Morning show in 2017, following his departure from BBC One’s Saturday Kitchen, which he hosted for a decade from 2006.
James revealed his reason for leaving the show during an appearance on Good Morning Britain at the time of his exit.
He shared how the sudden death of a stranger made him reconsider his position.
“I was chatting to him and he stood up on stage and collapsed and passed away in front of me,” James explained to Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid, back in 2017.
“That was just over a year ago and that was the decision to change,” he added.
“I look back at all the work I’d done, I’d done like four days off that year and five days off the year before and I thought something’s got to change.”
He added: “And that was partly the reason why I gave up the Saturday Kitchen show.”
James Martin’s Saturday Mornings airs on ITV at 9.25am.
