Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's comments about their home in Kensington Palace being “small” have been described as “tone deaf” by This Morning presenter Dermot O’Leary.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were gifted Nottingham Cottage – where Prince William and Princess Kate had once lived – by the late Queen Elizabeth II shortly after they were married in 2018.
But Harry and Meghan took a series of swipes at the home during their controversial Netflix documentary.
Their remarks led to criticism from some viewers – especially at a time when people across the country are struggling to heat their homes because of a cost of living crisis.
And Dermot O’Leary weighed into the debate on Friday’s This morning.
Talking about the show and Harry and Meghan’s comments about Nottingham Cottage, co-host Alison Hammond said: “Everyone saw that they were living in Kensington Palace but they wanted to show people it was actually quite a small little pad. It was only small.”
Dermot added: “I don’t really have any skin in the game here at all, but it did feel slightly tone deaf that part of the show.”
In episode four of Harry & Meghan, the couple discussed their life in Nottingham Cottage.
Harry, 38, said: “As far as people were concerned, we were living in a palace, and we were. But in a cottage on palace grounds.”
Meghan, 41, added: “Kensington Palace sounds very regal, of course it does it has palace in the name, but Nottingham Cottage was small.
“He (Harry) would just hit his head constantly in that place because he’s so tall.”
Harry continued: “The whole thing is on a slight lean, really low ceilings so I don’t know who was there before but they must have been very short.”
Meghan added that no one “could believe what it was actually like behind the scenes”.
Harry said: “Oprah (Winfrey) came over for tea didn’t she and she sat down and she goes ‘no-one would ever believe it’.”
The final three episodes of their Netflix documentary aired on Thursday morning – bringing with it a new set of bombshell revelations.
Meghan revealed it was the late Queen and the then-Prince Charles who suggested she write to her father Thomas following their estrangement. The letter was later leaked to a national newspaper.
Harry said he believed the stress caused by the leaked letter led to Meghan suffering a devastating miscarriage.
The Duchess of Sussex also told how she felt like a “foreign organism” when she first joined the Royal Family – while she was warned The Firm would find it hard to adjust to her.
She was also seen breaking down in tears as she discussed the death threats she’s received that have caused her to fear the safety of her children.
The latest episodes, which conclude the Harry & Meghan docuseries, also feature previously unseen moments from their wedding along with a treasure trove of previously unseen videos and pictures chronicling their son Archie's first milestones.
