‘I’m feeling happy, positive and optimistic’: Comedian Rhod Gilbert admits he feels like he’s ‘winning’ his cancer battle – five months after sharing his diagnosis

Comedian Rhod Gilbert has revealed that he believes he’s winning his battle against cancer and is feeling good as he recovers ‘day-by-day’.

The 53-year-old Welsh funnyman detailed the horrible news of his cancer diagnosis to his fans back in July, just days after pausing his UK tour.

But the star of TV’s Never Mind The Buzzcocks says he’s on the mend and planning a new comedy show based on his brave cancer fight.

‘Feeling good’: Comedian Rhod Gilbert has revealed that he believes he’s winning his battle against cancer and is feeling good as he recovers ‘day-by-day’

Gilbert said: ‘I’m feeling happy, positive and optimistic. I’m feeling good and feel like I’m recovering day-by-day.

‘Some days I’m well enough to do a bit of writing and I’ve got a feeling when I’ve got through all this there’ll be a show in it.’

The comedian and TV presenter was on a charity fundraising trek when he started to feel ill and noticed lumps appearing on his body.

He ended up being treated at Velindre in Cardiff, the cancer hospital he was raising money for.

Gilbert said the care he’s received is ‘beyond words’ but he has yet to be given the all-clear.

In an interview on BBC Radio Wales, he said; ‘I hope that 2023 is a better year and I can start having fun again,

‘The things people say when they find out you’ve got cancer – people panic. There’s a lot of humour in it.

‘Hopefully I’m going to jot it all down and one day bring it to the stage.’

Back in July, Rhod explained to his fans that he was beginning chemotherapy and radiation treatment as well as heading in for surgery after becoming ‘terribly poorly’.

Tough news: Comedian Rhod Gilbert announced he has cancer in a statement issued across social media in July this year

The Welsh star revealed he is being treated by the same Cardiff-based cancer centre he serves as patron of while praising the National Health Service for their incredible service.

Rhod, whose TV work includes a hosting role on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, didn’t reveal the type of cancer he had been diagnosed with, but said he is in the ‘best possible hands’.

Addressing Facebook followers, he wrote:  ‘As a proud patron of Velindre Cancer Centre, I’ve trekked the world, hosted chaotic quizzes and star-studded comedy nights. I’ve met and made friends with so many inspirational staff, patients and their families. It has been a huge part of my life for the last ten years.

‘So while I never imagined that I would be a patient here, I know better than anyone that I am in the best possible hands.

‘The NHS care I’m receiving is incredible. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone…but who knows, maybe I’ll come out the other end with a new stand-up show and a 40 minute rant about orange squash.

‘Thank you everyone for your support over the last few weeks and months (and years). I’ll be disappearing for a while and won’t be commenting further, at least not for now, whilst I focus on my recovery.’

Update: In August, Rhod Gilbert’s wife Sian Harries has revealed the couple have moved house three times since July to be closer to a hospital

After previously cancelling shows due to issues with his throat, he paused his Book of John book tour shortly before the diagnosis announcement in July.

Posting to Facebook on July 8, he wrote: ‘As many of you will know, I’ve been struggling with pain in my neck and throat over the past few months. I’ve been receiving treatment, and have continued to tour where possible.

‘I had sincerely hoped to go ahead with all dates as scheduled, but I’m afraid that is not going to be possible. I am due to have surgery next week and will be hanging up my boots for a while whilst I recuperate.’
