Chanelle Hayes told how she felt “disgusted” with herself after binge eating “all day long” following her gastric band surgery.
The former Big Brother star, 35, has shed nine stone – dropping from a dress size 18 to an eight – following the weight loss procedure in August 2020. But, in a candid post on Instagram to her 122,000 followers, she opened up on how the surgery has not “cured” her relationship with food.
Alongside an image showing her before and after her weight loss, shared with a trigger warning, the mother-of-two wrote: "Had a bad day today with my eating. I know many of you follow me because of my weight loss journey and disordered eating so I don’t want to hide that I’ve had a mare of a day when it comes to moderation.
"I’ve binged all day long on everything you can think of. Right now I’m feeling disgusted at myself, guilty, out of control, poorly, uncomfortable and angry.
"But I need to remember this is normal. I can’t just “cure” binge eating disorder with weight loss surgery."
Chanelle, who is mum to sons Blakely, 12, and Frankie, five, went on to say she was going to do some cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) exercises she had been shown to try to regain control of her actions towards food. She added she had been eating Frankie’s leftover pizza crusts even though she was “completely stuffed full”.
She said: “I am not hungry. This isn’t me being greedy… I cannot stop. Why am I doing this? The answer is: I don’t know.
"I need to remember tomorrow is a new day and I do NOTTTT need to restrict food, because that will lead to another binge. I need to look at the day with fresh eyes and from a guilt-free perspective and not beat myself up about the stuff I’ve eaten today.”
Chanelle went on to say that she spoke out because she wanted to raise awareness of this type of disordered eating. She concluded: "My body has changed, but my mind remains a work in progress.”
Fans flocked to show their support for Chanelle – with many empathising with her situation. One said: “I know exactly how you feel, I'm still on my journey with food and I'm nearly 60!”
Another added: “I really struggle with this too.” A third wrote: “I’ve never seen a post I can relate to so much.”
Earlier this week, Chanelle was praised by her followers for posting bikini snaps of herself at different angles. Under side-by-side pictures shared on Instagram, she penned she hoped it would bring "realness' to fans, as she encouraged people to remember that what others show online isn't always reality.
She wrote: "Don’t allow someone’s edited snapshot they share on their socials to ruin your reality.”
She continued: "Hopefully this will help mix up your feed with a bit of realness!!"
Earlier this year, the former Big Brother star told OK! exclusively that, despite having a gastric band fitted in August 2020, she still had insecurities and was considering a tummy tuck.
In another exclusive, Chanelle revealed that she can still eat takeaways and her favourite treats, but that she has to be careful.
