Carol Vorderman discusses her ‘special friends’ and says she ‘loves her life’

TV presenter Carol Vorderman recently gave an insight into her love life, revealing that she has five “special friends” who she dates.

Speaking on Michelle Visage’s Rule Breakers podcast, Carol, 62, opened up on the "system" that she’s had in place for the last decade and called it her "happy place".

And now the presenter has opened up about her dating life further to The Sun's Fabulous magazine, she said: "We sell every little girl the message: ‘Cinderella needs a prince to save her.’ Yet half of marriages end in divorce.

"I get frustrated when women are told to find a man. It’s b*****ks, because the goal is not to be in love, the goal is to be happy.

"I want to be able to genuinely say: 'I love my life.' And I can say that. So I don’t need to be validated by this nonsense. Love comes in many forms."

Carol added that she might have a boyfriend who "only lasts a few months", revealing she calls them "special friends", but she and the people involved are "very happy" about it, adding: "That’s between us, it’s nothing at all to do with anybody else."

It comes as Carol told Michelle on her Rule Breakers podcast: "I'm having the best time. I've spoken about this once. I have a system which I've had for 10 years. They're called 'special friends'.

“I spoke a couple of months ago about having 'special friends' and it was like, again, the world had fallen in for some people but actually what I found was there was an awful lot of women who said ‘I'd never thought about it like this’.”

Carol then went on to explain that she’d had long relationships with some of her special friends and had been dating them for years.

She added: “One's 11 years, one's seven years, you know everyone is single. It's a happy place. I hasten to add I'm not into one night stands.

“The language around a woman of my generation is that if you had more than one partner when you got married you were this you were that.

"Everything was derogatory about a woman, that was the environment I was growing up in. It was like ‘she's desperate’, everything was judgmental”.

Carol went on: “Well you can take all that and you can throw it out the window, that's my polite way of saying it.

“But there's no harm being done. It's a happy place to live. The only thing I was sold when I was young was a fairytale with a poor girl meets a prince they get married and they lived happily ever after.”

She then quipped: “This whole assumption: 'Have you got a partner yet? Have you got a man?' Well, no actually I've got five.”

Carol shares two children – Katie, 31, and Patrick, 25 – with management consultant Patrick King, whom she married in 1990 before separating 10 years later in 2000.

Speaking to OK! in 2021, Carol described herself as “strictly single” and spoke out about loving life in her 60s.

When asked if she was in a relationship, she said: “No, I’m strictly single – and I like it that way”.

She also added: “I love being this age. I can’t be doing with people who aren’t nice and I’ve never cared what people think.

“I have totally embraced 60. You can use it as an excuse and say, 'Oh well, it’s my age!' I adore it as I’m a cheeky bugger and mischievous. Mischief is my middle name and I do what I like. I’ve always been a bit of a rebel.”
