Japan has emerged as the top destination in 2018, according to Travel + Leisure.
The magazine chose Japan for its history, cities, trails, and cuisine. International visitors have also elevated the destination in recent years.
Recent past winners of the Travel + Leisure Destination of the Year include Canada and Portugal.
“Japan proved to us that it’s a cultural treasure, as it combines the perfect balance of history and modernity,” Jacqueline Gifford, editor-in-chief of Travel + Leisure, said in a written statement. “It’s unspoiled natural environments, dynamic cities, creative food and art scenes only makes the country more compelling at this moment.”
To launch this year’s announcement of the 2018 Destination of the Year, Travel + Leisure has released Locals, a new monthly series that will offer a look at a destination through the eyes of a local. The first episode, The Ramen Beasts of Japan, is available on Instagram TV and TravelandLeisure.com.
Travel + Leisure will feature a guide to Japan in the cover story of the December issue.
