Supermarkets have continued to update shopping rules as the coronavirus pandemic continues. Tesco has shared more information on what customers must do when visiting branches.
Shopping rules have been constantly updated during the coronavirus pandemic in line with government guidance.
Wearing face masks in stores has been mandatory in most parts of the UK since July.
However, government advice is continuing the change with stricter measures being introduced this week.
Tesco has shared details on how it is responding to the pandemic in an email from Tesco’s UK & Ireland CEO Jason Tarry today.
The statement explained: “I wanted to share an update on what we’re doing to ensure that everyone can get the food they need in a safe environment.
“To help protect our customers and colleagues, we have introduced some new measures in line with current government guidance, and also made sure the safety measures we introduced at the start of the pandemic remain in place.”
Where shopping masks are required, the government has increased fines from £100 to £200 for a first offence.
Some exemptions are in place for those who cannot wear a mask for medical reasons.
However, Tesco has explained shoppers who forget a mask should pick one up at the entrance to pay for later.
“When you visit our stores, please follow the legal guidance on wearing a face covering,” the message continued.
“If you forget to bring one, we have packs available to buy at the front of our stores, which you can open immediately and pay for with your shopping later.
“As a reminder, the police are able to issue fines for not wearing a face covering, unless you are exempt.”
The supermarket giant has extended opening times in supermarkets to ensure customers can get what they need.
The opening times vary depending on the location of the store and many 24 hour branches remain closed overnight.
Earlier this year, many supermarkets had long queues outside as they restricted the number of shoppers that could enter at one time.
Tesco has now explained a traffic light system would be put in place in selected stores.
This will help manage the flow of customers and monitor the number of people entering and leaving the store.
The statement said: “In the coming weeks, you will also start to see a simple ‘traffic light’ system at the entrances of some of our larger stores.”
Staff will also be on hand at the entrance to answer any questions customers may have.
The supermarket explained it has increased the number of online slots for those who cannot shop in stores easily.
Since the pandemic began, the number of home delivery and Click and Collect slots have doubled to 1.5 million.
