A bin ‘explosion’ in a park set two teenagers ‘ clothes on fire – leaving them with terrible burns and injuries.
After a paint tin was set on fire inside the bin, it burst into flames and set the pair’s clothes alight.
The incident happened at Ballysillan Park in North Belfast at 9.30pm on Wednesday night, reports Belfast Live .
A mum of one of the injured 15-year-olds said her daughter is “devastated” after her face, hair and even eyelashes were damaged.
She told Belfast Live: "She’s devastated. The bin was already on fire when my daughter and her friend were passing and it exploded.
"Loads of kids run about down there but no matter what, this is the danger of what can happen.
“I am angry as it could have been a lot worse. Hopefully whoever set it on fire sees the results of the girls’ injuries.
“My daughter’s hair is ruined, her face is burnt and her eyelashes, plus her hand. Her coat was also melted.
“Also another wee girls legs are all burnt.”
The woman described the the second girls injuries as “bad”.
But she said: “It could have been a lot worse”, adding, “one day it’s going to be a child dead”.
PUP councillor Julie-Anne Corr-Johnston has raised concerns about the “antisocial” incident following months of calm in the Ballysillan area.
“Someone had set a bin on fire. There was a paint tin inside and it exploded,” she explained.
“One girl’s jeans caught fire and she suffered second degree burns.
“The other girl’s coat melted. Her face was scorched and her whole hair was singed. She will have to get about seven inches off it.”
Both girls were treated by their mums following the incident, but it is understood they also sought medical attention.
Cllr Corr-Johnston added: “I dread to think what could have happened. Anybody setting a bin on fire is dangerous.
“Please have a chat with your young people.
“Setting fire to a bin, whilst it may seem trivial when compared to the issues we have been experiencing in North Belfast of late, is still criminal damage.
"Actions that have consequences and in this case, criminal action that has created two victims.
“Thankfully both girls, whilst in a lot of pain, will make a full recovery.”
