NEW YORK – Sigrid Nunez won the 2018 National Book Award for fiction for “The Friend” (Riverhead) at a ceremony in New York City Wednesday night.
In the novel, a woman whose best friend dies is left with his Great Dane, which is grieving his master’s loss as much as she is.
The 69th annual National Book Awards were sponsored by the National Book Foundation. Diversity was once again in the spotlight throughout the evening.
In accepting her award, Nunez, the daughter of a German mother and Chinese-Panamanian father, said, “For a writer, nothing is ever quite as bad as it is for other people, because no matter how dreadful, it could be of use.”
