There are some products that just instantly become cult classics, and which everyone should have in their make-up bags.

And Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Pillow Talk Lipstick and its matching Lip Cheat Lip Liner are two such products. The perfect suits-all shade of pinky-nude, there probably isn’t a celebrity who hasn’t worn them at one point. It was even the wedding day shade of choice for Amal Clooney and Poppy Delevingne.

But, at £17, the lip liner isn’t the cheapest way to enhance your pout. Fortunately we’ve discovered a bargain alternative – and it costs just £1!

Last year the beauty world went wild for Essence Soft Contouring Lip Liner in the shade Lost in Love. Shoppers raved about its creamy formula, velvety matte finish and striking similarity to the iconic Pillow Talk shade – as well as its bargain price of just £1.

One beauty blogger bought it deliberately as a cheaper alternative to the Charlotte Tilbury pencil, and was blown away by it.

“It strikes just the right balance between waxy and creamy, so it easily draws a clean line without skipping or pulling on my lips. And it stays on for hours,” she wrote. “The shade is also a flawless match for my lips, which makes it perfect for overlining without looking obvious.”

“I love this pencil so much, I buy it in bulk and keep one in every bag.”

It disappeared from shelves for a while, but bargain hunters will be happy to hear that Essence – which is also available in Wilko stores – has just relaunched it. Now called the Soft & Precise Lip Pencil, it has the same creamy formula, and the shade that customers loved for its likeness to Pillow Talk is now called 102 True Me – and it’s still just £1.

This isn’t the first time social media has alerted us to a way of getting the Charlotte Tilbury look for a fraction of the price. TikTok users recently went crazy for this £3.50 dupe for another of the brand’s most popular lipstick shapes, Very Victoria.

And if you’re after more budget beauty booty, head to Aldi for great value alternatives to high-end make-up and skincare brands, while Facebook users claim these £8 products work just as well as pricey hair treatment Olaplex.
