Say goodbye to chafing with these five incredibly handy tips that apply in all seasons

During the warmer months, inner-thigh chafing becomes somewhat of an uncomfortable reality for a lot of us as dripping with sweat takes a back seat on the annoying things that happen in the summer front, somewhere behind hay fever.

As Web MD explains: “Chafing can occur anywhere on your body, but the thighs, groin, underarms, and nipples are particularly vulnerable.”

But fear not, as, luckily, there are a handful of foolproof ways to avoid it from happening – hurrah – and Reginald Ofori, founder of Smoovall, which is a spray which helps combat chafing, spoke exclusively to OK! online to reveal his tips.

“Chafing is most likely to occur during the summer months as the weather heats up,” Reginald explained. He continued: “When your body gets hot and you sweat more, you’re most likely to experience chafing as your thighs for example can rub together and become sore, itchy and painful.

“For skin chafing to happen, we need the combination of moisture and repetitive friction. Let’s take thigh chafing as example. When you go walking, flaunting those beautiful bear legs, it’s very likely your legs will rub against each other for a prolonged time, this equals the friction part.

“When it’s hot, this friction will result in sweating, which forms the moisture part, and when this happens, the salt crystals in your sweat will evaporate and the substance that is left on your skin turns into something which is best compared to sanding paper. Queue skin chafing.”

As this experience doesn’t sound like the most fun, here are Reginald’s tips to stop it…

Wash clothes after exercising

Reginald explains that washing clothes after exercising in them is a must, as bacteria on our bodies will otherwise cling to our workout clothes causing skin breakouts.

Avoid duct tape

“Avoid duct tape,” Reginald says, continuing: “Many people use duct tape to prevent chafing, however this can irritate the skin and is not a long term option. Many short term solutions like this can cause new problems, add to the pain and are overall unnecessary.”

No duct tape it is then!

Say goodbye to plasters

As well as no duct tape, Smoovall founder Reginald also believes that the plasters must go too.

He explains: “Plasters have many set backs like collecting bacteria, moisture and odour during your workout –another poor option for your skin!”

If working out, choose the right attire

Working out is more likely to cause chafing, so choosing the right clothing is advisable.

Reginald says: “Choose comfortable and clean workout clothing that fits well. Performance workout gear is designed to be breathable and will help prevent chafing. A reason to indulge in some nice gym clothes!

Apply a healing cream before bed

Before you cosy on down for the night, apply a healing cream as this will really help.

Reginald explains: “Since your cells regenerate over night, skin heals well when you sleep and this will help prevent damage next time you workout.”
