Costume designer Patricia Field is the mastermind behind the iconic fashion looks on “Sex and the City,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” “Ugly Betty” and “Younger.”
And now, the native New Yorker is sprinkling her stylish magic dust on 2020’s most in-demand and important accessory: the humble face mask.
“Let’s look at it as the new fashion accessory,” Field, 78, told Page Six Style during a recent Zoom chat. “I have several masks and I wear them the way I wear my other accessories: whatever goes best with my outfit.”
Of course, the coronavirus-blocking face coverings on offer at Field’s ArtFashion Gallery — all custom-made by a select group of artists — aren’t your usual variety. There’s hand-painted masks by Jody Morlock and Scooter LaForge, edgy studded numbers courtesy of Studmuffin NYC’s Kyle Brincefield and elaborate mixed-media creations by Dope Tavio.
Those in search of something a little more glamorous, meanwhile, will love Field’s leopard-print and sequined masks.
The ArtFashion founder is also offering silver, gold and multicolored mask chains made by Pretty Connected’s Lara Eurdolian, which can also function as necklaces, camera straps, bag chains or water bottle holders.
“It’s giving birth to a whole new group of accessories,” Field said of New York’s mask mandate.
Field fans can see the masks in action during the costume designer’s upcoming virtual runway show during New York Fashion Week.
“It was really fun and a new experience to put it together; we did it in a studio, and we’re in the process of editing it and it represents all of our artists,” Field said. “I really enjoyed it — it was a new experience for me.”
