No celebrity guest in the history of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? has ever gotten the top prize, until now.
Chef and restaurateur David Chang made history — plus $1 million for charity — on Sunday's episode when he correctly answered the last question in a nail-biting moment. And he has his friend, journalist Mina Kimes, to thank, as she gave him the right answer via the phone-a-friend lifeline.
The U.S. history question certainly stumped Chang.
It asked, "Although he and his wife never touched a light switch for fear of being shocked, who was the first president to have electricity in the White House?"
Kimes said she thought it was "probably [Benjamin] Harrison," and despite her not being 100 percent sure, Chang said "she's so much smarter than I am, though."
"I didn't do well enough in school and I was a terrible student — that's why I became a chef," he quipped.
If he answered wrong, Chang's $500,000 from previous rounds would have dropped down to $32,000.
Just to give him added pressure, host Jimmy Kimmel reminded Chang that no celebrity "in the 20 years that this show has been on ever won the million dollars."
In the end, Chang's "stupid confidence" won out, and he stuck with Harrison as the final answer.
After what felt like an eternity of suspense, Kimmel said Chang just won $1 million for his charity, Southern Smoke Foundation. He was presented with the hilariously large check by writer and director Alan Yang, who appeared in Chang's food series Ugly Delicious on Netflix.
Below, watch Chang celebrate his win and find out Kimes almost went with another president before she was cut off.
"Finally, my college education is justified!" she said, upon finding out Chang stuck with her answer.
