You’ve been reading your horoscope all wrong – here’s how to properly interpret it

If you just scroll through until your find your star sign then you’re not getting the most out of what the planets hold for you.

Within astrology there are many different elements, planets and forces in play.

Each sign has a ruling planet and a ruling element which also influences how we feel and act.

And to fully understand your star sign – you need to know what all the different aspects are.

Sun sign

This may sound alien but it’s probably the one thing you actually know.

This is what sign the sun was in the day you were born – so it’s your traditional star sign, be it Cancer, Gemini or Taurus or one of the other nine.

The sun sign is the most commonly referenced in western astrology as it’s key in your chart but there are others you also need to consider to get a full reading.

Star sign dates

  • Aquarius: January 20 – February 18
  • Pisces: February 19 – March 20
  • Aries: March 21 – April 19
  • Taurus: April 20 – May 20
  • Gemini: May 21 – June 20
  • Cancer: June 21 – July 22
  • Leo: July 23 – August 22
  • Virgo: August 23 – September 22
  • Libra: September 23 – October 22
  • Scorpio: October 23 – November 21
  • Sagittarius: November 22 – December 21
  • Capricorn: December 22 – January 19

Rising sign

To work this out – you need to know the time you were born.

As well as moving through the months, different signs are also attributed to times in the day.

Your rising, or ascendant, sign will be the sign rising over the horizon when you were born.

Each of the 12 signs fits a two-hour window within the 24-hour cycle.

It’s important to take note of this sign, Tarot.com says, as it represents ‘you’ on a day-to-day basis.

They said: “If you've ever been confused by the fact that people perceive you very differently from how you see yourself, it's because what people see can be dominated by Rising sign traits rather than the Sun sign traits you understand yourself to have."

People can also be “dominated” by their Rising sign rather than their Sun sign so it’s worth knowing which one you are.

Some astrologers use a chart, such as this one from Asktheastrologers.com to determine your Rising sign.

Each sign's ruling element

  • Fire: Aries, Leo, Scorpio
  • Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
  • Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
  • Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

What does it all mean?

So get a holistic view of your star sign, you need to find out your rising sign.

The rising sign will give you a better interpretation of your daily life.

Tarot.com added: “The Sun sign horoscope will offer vital information about the general themes happening for you – kind of like an overview.

“The Rising sign horoscope will flesh out the timing of when things will happen for you with greater accuracy.”

Depending on time, date and place of birth each person will have a unique astrological map.

It’s important to note that even though you have ruling planets and houses, they all play a part in some way and you must look at the map as a whole to work how all the positions effect you individually at any given time.
