The Weeknd rocks bruised and bloodied face for MTV VMAs rehearsals

The Weeknd may have been seen leaving his rehearsal for the MTV Video Music Awards with a bloodied and bruised face, but don’t worry it’s all for show.

The singer, 30, had us all taking a double look as he stepped out sporting several gashes on his face across his nose and eyebrow and underneath his eye.

Rocking his fake injuries, The Weeknd was dressed in a red suit blazer and an all-black outfit underneath and didn’t seem fazed as he strolled past fans with his stage make-up still very much intact.

You see his appearance isn’t as bad as it looks, as the cuts are fake and all part of the star’s latest look for his new music.

Fans of The Weeknd will recognise his stage costume as the very same outfit and bloodied appearance that he is seen with in the music video to his single Blinding Lights.

The video begins with The Weeknd rather creepily laughing while bent over in his suit and blood running down his face.

It’s the running theme for The Weeknd’s latest album After Hours that takes on a psychedelic vibe taking inspiration from films like Casino and Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker.

The critically-acclaimed album was a hit following its release in March, with singles taken from the album Heartless and Blinding Lights both hitting the top spot in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Speaking about single Blinding Lights, The Weeknd revealed its dark meaning in an interview Esquire.

He explained: ‘Blinding Lights [is about] how you want to see someone at night, and you’re intoxicated, and you’re driving to this person and you’re just blinded by streetlights.’

‘But nothing could stop you from trying to go see that person, because you’re so lonely,’ the Starboy hit-maker continued.

‘I don’t want to ever promote drunk driving, but that’s what the dark undertone is.’

The Weeknd will be performing during the televised VMAs next week, with Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga all set to take to the stage too.

He’s been nominated for an impressive six awards too, including best artist, with Blinding Lights landing nods for best R&B video, best video, best direction, best editing and best cinematography.

The MTV VMAs are set to air on August 31 on MTV UK from 9pm.
