Why Kelly Rowland’s magazine cover is turning heads

The latest issue of Women’s Health is making waves in more ways than one. For their first-ever music issue, the outlet chose singer Kelly Rowland to grace the cover — and she’s expecting! Combining the exciting news with a deep-dive into Rowland’s experience being pregnant during the pandemic, the latest issue will hit stands later this month.

Rowland’s new baby will join a family including five-year-old brother, Titan Jewell, and the singer’s husband, Tim Weatherspoon (via People). The Destiny’s Child star shares that her first trimester mainly served as a time to rest as she experienced high levels of exhaustion. Giving into peanut butter and chocolate cravings, Rowland seems to be taking her pregnancy in stride by keeping her movement routine limited to gentler exercises such as walking, stretching, and yoga (via Women’s Health).

When it came to conceiving, the 39-year-old says that she and her husband “had been talking about it loosely, and then COVID happened, and we were just like, ‘Let’s see what happens.'” The couple’s joy over getting pregnant relatively quickly came tinged with guilt as many have struggled with the difficulties of this year, and the soon-to-be-mother-of-two debated doing the interview with the magazine. She eventually decided to move forward, saying, “But you still want to remind people that life is important, and being able to have a child…I’m knocking at 40’s door in February. Taking care of myself means a lot to me.”

Prior to her pregnancy, Kelly Rowland's schedule was jam-packed

A year ago, you would have found Rowland jetting around the world, working on the Australian version of The Voice, getting her son to school on time, fitting in daily 90-minute workouts and taking meetings from her car. But, her second pregnancy combined with the pandemic and social justice crisis taking place in 2020 left her more fatigued than she anticipated, as she shares with the mag.

Her slower schedule gave her more time for her favorite activity — spending time with her son, Titan. The five-year-old loves to play pretend with dinosaurs, complete with costumes for himself and his mother. In fact, her son’s pleas for a playmate may have had more to do with her pregnancy than one would think.

Last year, the “Motivation” singer told People that Titan was asking for a brother. “He’s like, ‘We’re going to have a brother, Mom,'” she said. “I said, ‘Well, he won’t be my brother — he’ll be my son — [and] what if it’s a girl?’ ” — and to that, Titan’s response was, ” ‘No, it’s not a girl, it’s a brother.’ “

While Rowland has yet to reveal the baby’s gender, Titan may be right after all!
