When you think about celebrity power couples, there’s a good chance that six-time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady and model Gisele Bündchen come to mind. They started dating more than a decade ago, and they’ve been going from strength to strength ever since.
But their relationship isn’t as perfect as it seems — according to Brady himself. In a new interview, the NFL star admitted that their marriage is “challenging” at times.
A quick recap of Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen’s relationship
These two met in 2006 while Brady was in a relationship with his then-girlfriend, actress Bridget Moynahan. Despite this, they both felt an instant attraction to each other.
“I knew right way — the first time I saw him,” Bündchen later told Vanity Fair. “We met through a friend. The moment I saw him, he smiled and I was like, ‘That is the most beautiful, charismatic smile I’ve ever seen!’ We sat and talked for three hours. I had to go home for Christmas, but I didn’t want to leave. You know that feeling of, like, you can’t get enough? From the first day we met, we’ve never spent one day without speaking to each other.”
Brady and Moynahan soon split. By the end of the year, he had moved on with the supermodel.

My friends always ask me as a brazilian how do I survive the New England cold. I have a really cozy @tombrady blanket. ❤️ Meus amigos sempre me perguntam como uma brasileira faz pra sobreviver no frio de Boston. É porque eu tenho uma cobertor super aconchegante. @tombrady
In January of 2009, Brady proposed, and they got married the following month. The couple welcomed their first child together, Benjamin Rein, in December of 2009. (Brady also has a son, John Edward Thomas, with Moynahan.)
Tom Brady’s latest comments on his relationship with Gisele Bündchen
Brady opened up about his marriage in a clip from E!’s new series, In the Room, which, according to the network, “will take viewers inside celebrity homes for in-depth interviews and conversation.”
“I think, you know, marriages…they ebb and they flow,” Brady told host Jason Kennedy in the clip, which came out on Nov. 15. “I think the challenging part for us is [that] we are very ambitious people and a lot of times, you know, I’m going one direction, she’s going the other and it’s ships passing in the night. I’m going to football and she’s got things she’s doing. Oh, by the way, the kids!”
But they both put in the effort to ensure that their romance lasts.
“I think we just have to make sure we take time for one another, and I think if you want it to get better and improve you gotta communicate,” Brady continued. “I want to support her and her dreams, and she wants to support me and mine. It’s not like because I’m a football player her life is gonna stop.”
The show does not launch until 2020, but Brady’s episode will air on Dec. 4 during a “primetime special event.”

Tom Brady’s career seems to cause the most tension in their marriage
For years, reports have claimed that Brady and Bündchen tend to fight over when he should hang up his cleats for good. In a 2017 interview with CBS This Morning, Brady, who is now 42, said that he intends to play in the NFL until his “mid-forties,” which didn’t appear to sit well with his wife.
“I think we go back and forth,” Brady said. “She’ll always say to me, ‘Well, ten years ago, you told me it was only gonna be ten years. And now it’s ten years, and now you’re saying another, you know, five years.’”
He also told SiriusXM NFL Radio the same year (via ABC News), “If it was up to my wife, she would have me retire today. She told me that last night three times.”
However, he said that he wasn’t ready to retire just yet. “I said, ‘Too bad, babe, I’m having too much fun right now,’” Brady continued. “You know, I feel like I can still do it. I’d be so bored if I wasn’t going out there, knowing that I could still do it. So, I’m going to work hard to be ready to go, and I still plan on playing for a long time.”
The good thing is that Bündchen knows how to compromise and ultimately allows Brady to do what makes him happy (and vice versa). Take notes, folks — that’s how it’s done.
