TV and radio star Gemma Atkinson took to social media today to explain why she is being “more vigilant” at home. The 35-year-old former soap star, who lives with boyfriend Gorka Marquez, one-year-old daughter Mia and their two pet dogs, spoke about how the heatwave is affecting them all.

In a video posted online this morning, Gemma said she was keeping an eye on her daughter and beloved dogs, Norman and Ollie, this week.

She told her 1.5 million followers that the heat was making them “shorter tempered”.

The dog-lover said she was trying to keep her toddler away from her pooches because of the heat, but the youngster loved nothing more stroking them

Former Strictly Come Dancing finalist Gemma posted footage of Mia with the family pet online and wrote next to it: “Having to be even more vigilant today with Mia around the boys!”

“Like us in this heat they are shorter tempered & just cant be bothered. Last thing they need or want is to feel smothered,” she went on to say.

“She loves stroking them but obviously I’m mindful they have to enjoy it too.”

Sharing a bit more information about their home life, the mum-of-one continued: “She’s never alone with them, not only for her sake but for theirs as well.

“They were here first and our home is their territory.”

Gemma explained that her dogs were calmer when she was around and joked that she was a “cruel mum” for not letting her daughter drink from the dog bowl.

“I know they are calmer when I’m around with Mia. They seem to rest more when I’m in the room.

“Especially Ollie, he’s getting older now and sometimes I can tell he just wants to be alone,” she revealed.

The radio star continued: “The only problem so far is that Mia hates me and screams when I won’t allow her to drink out of their bowl with them.

“I know, I know, what a cruel mum I am,” she joked.

Instagram followers took to the comments section in their droves to share their thoughts.

“You are such a wonderful mother to your dogs and Mia,” one social media user wrote.

Another added: “So pleased to see this, so many people allow their kids to grab at their dogs and then wonder why the dog snaps. Really responsible Gemma, beautiful Mia, beautiful dogs, beautiful family.”

“Good advice Gemma, you are so switched on. Any dog no matter how much we think we know them, they shouldn’t be trusted 100 per cent with young children,” a third user remarked.
