EastEnders star Maisie Smith opens up in an exclusive new interview and shoot with OK! magazine , with the talented actress revealing that she has experienced bullying on social media.
The 18 year old has played redhead Tiffany Butcher on-and-off on EastEnders since the age of six and tells us that her childhood has “gone very fast.”
When it comes to social media, Maisie said she has had messages from cruel trolls, with some even shockingly calling her ugly.
She said: “Everyone experiences the odd negative comment, but I just ignore them.
"I don’t let them affect me because there are so many other comments full of love. It’s usually just people saying: ‘You’re ugly,’ or weird, random things like that.
"I’ve grown up with social media and just focus on the positive stuff."
Having joined EastEnders at such a young age, Maisie says she is used to life in the spotlight.
She said: “It’s all I’ve ever known; I’ve been acting since the age of four. When I was working with Charlie Brooks [who played EastEnders’ Janine Butcher], she said: ‘Whatever happens in your career, stay grounded,’ and that has stayed with me.
"I don’t feel like I’ve struggled at all with fame; I’ve managed to work my life around it."
The beauty said she feels like she has grown up quicker than other teens, due to her job on the BCC soap.
Maisie said: “While my friends were at school hanging out with their friends, I was sitting in the studio with a load of adults, being treated and directed like one. My childhood has gone very fast, but I’ve loved it."
EastEnders stars: Past and present
She continued: “Life could sometimes be a bit more challenging, especially in secondary school.
“At times, it could be hard to work out who your true friends were and who just wanted the person from the TV at their party.
“I had years of being let down by people but it’s also helped me make true, lasting friendships.”
Maisie was recently surrounded by the people she considers to be true friends as she celebrated turning 18.
Speaking about her party, she told OK!: "I went to a club in London with 15 of my friends. It had a ball pit, it was amazing. We had so much fun.
"I didn’t invite any of my castmates because I didn’t think they’d want to party with a load of 18 year olds.
"But they gave me loads of presents, which I wasn’t expecting – a voucher for gym shoes from Danny Walters [Keanu Taylor] as we often train together, and champagne from Natalie Cassidy [Sonia Fowler] and Shona McGarty [Whitney Dean]. It was lovely."
Ditching her character’s signature gold bomber jacket, Maisie shared a photo of herself in a pub wearing a yellow crop top, pink cardigan and jeans, while holding a pink shimmery “18” balloon and a unicorn gift bag.
Along with a pub party, the actress also visited Ballie Ballerson in Hackney to continue her celebrations.
Maisie later shared a photo on her Instagram story of one of her gifts – a set of five miniature bottles of different flavoured vodka.
Birthday wishes came flooding in from her co-stars, with Shona writing on Twitter: “Can’t believe I’m saying this..: Happy 18th Birthday to my (not so little) Baby sister! @maisie_smith_ Love you so much, and hope you have an amazing day! ” [sic]
