Dan Walker, 43, was joined on BBC Breakfast by Sally Nugent, 49, today, as the pair discussed beavers. But the presenters were cheekily called out by none other than comedian Johnny Vegas on Twitter, as he discussed making “small talk”.

In view of his 671,000 followers, Dan retweeted a message from the comic.

Johnny penned: “Struggling for small talk on a chilly Monday morning? ‘Beavers actually have a narrow skillset….’ Thanks, @BBCBreakfast.”

Dan thankfully saw the funny side of the comedian’s cheeky quip but seemingly issued a light-hearted plea for help.

He replied: “Send help #BBCBreakfast,” followed by a beaver emoji.

It comes after the BBC hosts shared footage of a beaver building a dam.

“Very clever, aren’t they beavers?” Dan began.

Sally replied: “I’m not sure they are, you know.”

The BBC host countered: “No, I mean they’re clever in terms of building dams. They’re quite thick.”

The sports presenter followed up: “Technically, they’re brilliant [at building dams]. That’s their skill.”

“I can’t believe you’ve had a pop at beavers,” Dan argued. “It’s very clever building a dam, don’t underestimate them.”

The BBC host then asked Sally if it was beaver mating season, but she was unsure.

She said: “They have a small skillset…. a narrow skillset.”

Their awkward back and forth certainly caught the attention of viewers who took to social media.

One person said: “Poor @sallynugent you just know when you are going to get roasted for a comment. I did wince when you said it but it also made me laugh out loud.”

Another person commented: “That really made me giggle.”

“More beaver facts please Dan,” a third person remarked.

It didn’t take long for social media users to quiz Dan about his missing co-star Louise Minchin.

One person quizzed: “Where’s Louise?” as another Twitter user echoed: “Yes, where’s Louise?”

It comes as the BBC regular was absent from her regular Monday to Wednesday slot last week.

Louise did not appear on today’s show with Sally stepping in to replace her on the breakfast sofa.

It is not known why the star has been absent from the programme.

BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One at 6am.
