The Cannes red carpet is springing to life again as the 76th Film Festival gets underway with the premiere of the Louis XV period drama Jeanne du Barry.

The film marks actor Johnny Depp’s return to cinema for the first time following his highly publicised libel trial against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Period drama Jeanne du Barry, directed by and co-starring the French actor-director Maïwenn, co-stars Johnny Depp as Louis XV.

It’s his first new film since his trial last year with Amber Heard, his ex-wife.

After both Johnny and Amber accused each other of physical and verbal abuse, a civil jury awarded him $10 million in damages and $2 million to Amber.

In remarks to the press Monday, Cannes director Thierry Fremaux defended the choice, saying Depp is extraordinary in the film and he paid no attention to the trial.

‘To tell you the truth, in my life, I only have one rule, it’s the freedom of thinking, the freedom of speech and the freedom to act within a legal framework,’ said Fremaux.

‘If Johnny Depp had been banned from acting in a film, or the film was banned we wouldn’t be here talking about it.’

Depp previously appeared as King Louis XV in promo images for his highly-anticipated film which were released back in January.

The veteran actor looked regal as the French monarch beside co-star/director Maiwenn Le Besco, who plays King Louis’ mistress, Jeanne du Barry.

In 2016, Heard, 36, famously accused the actor, 59, of domestic violence, which led to Depp being blacklisted by much of Hollywood resulting in loss of film roles.

A jury determined that Heard’s claims, which were published in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed, against Depp were defamatory and she was ordered to pay the actor $15 million in damages.

Depp was ordered to pay Heard $2million by the same courtroom after Heard countersued for defamation.

Heard filed an appeal in early December, but the the former couple recently came to an agreement that Heard would pay $1million in order to settle the case instead of heading into a third trial.

Lawyers for Depp, Benjamin Chew and Camille Vasquez, said the actor is glad the ‘painful chapter’ is over and confirmed he would donate the money to charity.

In an Instagram statement, Heard confirmed the settlement but refused to accept guilt and declared her life had been ‘destroyed’ by the jury’s decision.

In 2020, a British court ruled that 12 of 14 violence incidents claimed by Heard were ‘substantially true,’ and Depp was subsequently forced to resign from the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ franchise at the request of Warner Bros.

This year’s festival promises a Cote d’Azur buffet of spectacle, scandal and cinema set to be served over the next 12 days.

Regal: Johnny Depp ‘s comeback film Jeanne du Barry was chosen to open the festival

It’s unspooling against the backdrop of labor unrest. Protests that have roiled France in recent months over changes to its pension system are planned to run during the festival, albeit at a distance from the festival’s main hub.

Meanwhile, an ongoing strike by screenwriters in Hollywood could have unpredictable effects on the French Riviera festival.

But with a festival lined with some much-anticipated big-budget films, including James Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of the Destiny and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, the party is sure to go on, regardless.

The world’s biggest film festival will conclude with the Closing Ceremony on May 27.
