They may not be entirely new, and you may have seen them before, but as Allure puts it, hairstyles don’t really disappear — they just move into the shadows for a bit, and all of a sudden, the style is spotted on celebrities and social media. Which is good because if you’re not in on the bob trend yet, 2020 may be your moment, especially if you’re not keen on making a drastic change and going with a short haircut this year.
Latest Hairstyles is partial to the “long bob” or lob, simply because it works with just about every face shape and hair type there is. This medium-length style lends itself to different styling options, from straight as a pin to beachy waves. The only thing a lob requires is a bit of thought beforehand — to decide how your lob might frame your face, and which type suits your type of hair best.
To perk up your lob, you may want to consider bangs, which hairstylist Alan Vuong expects to see a lot of this year. Bangs are expected to run the gamut of styles from sideswept bangs and curtain bangs to bangs that part in the middle.
Dress up your medium-length hair with layers
Layering is a great way to dress up shoulder-length hair. Layers make thick hair light and bouncy, and they add the illusion of volume for thin hair. Latest Hairstyles also thinks layers are a great way to frame your face, because they make angular features look softer.
And we’re not just talking about any layers here. Cosmopolitan says the chopped, shaggy layered hairstyle from the 70s is being given a new 2020s vibe. and if you want to shake things up a bit, you may want to consider keeping your bangs long and adding texture to other parts of your hair.
Control your curls with a 2020s cut
We hear you. You hair is curly and it’s a bear to control. Latest Hairstyles suggests getting on board with using products formulated to control curls and frizz, and getting down to it by working out a way to shape your curly hair so it frames your face in a flattering way.
“Natural curls and coils are taking the world by storm and the shape of the hair is what helps make the best impact,” hairstylist Annagjid “Kee” Taylor tells Allure. “The rounded ‘fro is one of the most popular looks. The cut will keep your coils healthy and your curls full of life. Although there are so many ways to cut your curly hair, right now [a] rounded [shape] or the ‘lion cut’ are my absolute favorites. It’s cutting or trimming hair to shape the natural curls into the roundest form possible. A lot of women’s hair naturally grows in this shape, but some have to be cut and formed.”
Adopt a one-length cut in 2020
If you really want your hairstyle to make an impact, Allure suggests going for the one-length style, and we’re talking about a sleek, modern one-length ‘do over one with texture (Kim Kardashian comes to mind).
“We’re seeing [more] shine versus matte hairsprays. More blunt thick lines in haircuts instead of shattered textured haircuts,” hairstylist Riawna Capri says.
Fellow stylist Glenn Ellis agrees; he tells Allure, “It will be making a huge comeback in the year coming. It’s a super simple cut that gives a bold statement. I give this haircut to my girls who want to leave their hair long without the fuss of layers. It’s also my favorite haircut come summer because you can put every piece in a ponytail with no issue.”
