The Chase star Darragh Ennis breaks silence on claims he’s ‘been sacked’ amid show absence

The Chase: Contestant accepts Darragh’s high offer of £120,000

Darragh Ennis has finally spoken out after The Chase fans queried why he has been noticeably absent from the ITV show and its spin-off programme Beat The Chasers this year. Darragh, 40, made his debut on The Chase as the series’ first new Chaser in five years towards the end of last year.

However, fans recently took to Twitter to question whether the quizzer, known as The Menace on the show, had “been sacked” due to his lack of appearances in 2021.

One fan penned: “Was the new Chaser a mirage or a dream? Hasn’t been on for ages. #TheChase.”

Another added: “Have they sacked The Menace? #TheChase.”

A third viewer asked: “Where’s the new chaser at? Only seen him in like two shows #TheChase.”

A fourth fan commented: “Where is #themenace Darragh on #BeatTheChasers? #TheChase @BradleyWalsh @annehegerty4.”

Fortunately, despite the concerns expressed by some viewers, Darragh reassured them that he has not lost his place oN The Chase.

He wrote this afternoon in view of his 12,000 Twitter followers: “Sigh. I’ve not been sacked.”

Explaining his absence, Darragh added: “The nature of random scheduling means sometimes we don’t have a show air for a little while, and sometimes we’re on 2 or 3 times in a week.”

The star reaffirmed his point by adding a link to Guinness’ famous Good Things Come To Those Who Wait advert.

The Menace also didn’t appear in the latest series of Beat The Chasers, which ITV explained was due to scheduling clashes.

Fans took to the comments section of the Chaser’s post to share their thoughts.

One person asked: “Just out of curiosity Darragh why is it they are aired out of order of episode number order?”

The Menace replied: “Not my department but it can be to ensure a mix of wins and losses each week.

“Sometimes they move a show if a question is there about someone who e.g. died recently.

“But not my gig, the schedulers and producers have a very tough job tbh. Heroes all.”(sic)

“How is it decided who’s coming out?” Another fan questioned in reference to which Chasers are selected to appear on each episode.

“All 6 of us are stuck in a giant bingo machine like on the national lottery,” Darragh humorously quipped.

Darragh joined Jenny Ryan, Mark Labbett, Anne Hegerty, Paul Sinha and Shaun Wallace after impressing fans when he appeared on the ITV show as a contestant in 2017.

The Oxford University researcher tweeted about joining the programme back in April last year.

He penned: “I’m really excited to be the 6th chaser on #TheChase.

“I’ve been working hard on this for a while now and can’t wait for my episodes to air. Well the ones I win anyway.”
