Just Jane: I fear my love will quit me for a man

Before him she messed around with a mutual, female friend of ours. They used to get drunk together at parties and end up groping in dark corners.

I lost count of the times I had to physically prise them apart. Friends warned me I was mad for putting up with it. That was humiliating enough, but this latest chap seems to be more serious.

What gets me is that we are still making love and our sex life is as exciting as ever.

I only feel truly alive when I’m holding her in my arms. She always says I’m her “special girl”.

So why does she have to make everything so hard for me?

JANE SAYS: I suspect your friends are despairing of you right now. They watched you, on a regular basis, dragging your girlfriend out of the arms of another woman and now they’re witnessing you being hurt all over again.

When is this circus ever going to end? The fact is your girlfriend is selfish and unkind. She cares only for herself and treats you like a fool. You say you love her, but she loves only herself. She has to hear that you intend to claim back your sanity and dignity by dumping her.

You and she don’t have an open relationship, therefore she isn’t entitled to sleep with anyone else. Cheating is cheating. Tell her you refuse to take any more. You are not her safe haven or her safety net and refuse to be anyone’s back-up plan.

If she can’t treat you with the love and respect you’re due, then you have no future together. This is going to be tough, but it has to be done for your own peace of mind.

Once she’s gone, take dating off the agenda while you clear your head and make peace with your family.

They need to hear that your sexuality is not their business and you won’t be controlled, but that you do all need to start talking and understanding again.
