Lady Bunny thinks Pride parade has become too corporate

Drag-queen pioneer Lady Bunny has joined a growing chorus of voices who think the Pride parade has gotten too corporate.

“A lot of the floats now are Sprint and Red Bull, or corporations with straight bodybuilders playing music that they think gay people will like,” Bunny told us at a Pride event hosted by fashion brand Alice + Olivia. “It seems more of a marketing thing than a march. They televise the parade and the broadcast mainly includes the big corporate floats,” not “civic-minded groups.”

“There has always been a dialogue of: Is this parade a march for our rights, or is it a parade with balloons and confetti? Some feel it’s gone too far in the direction of confetti. Maybe because of political developments, they feel it’s time to renew our commitment to the struggle.”

Bunny will be walking in a Reclaim Pride Coalition march — which promises “no corporate floats.”

Despite what she told us, Bunny admitted she will also be on a sponsored float at the Pride parade, and she’ll DJ for a “RuPaul’s Drag Race” party.

“I’m doing everything I possibly can,” she said.

Others at the Alice + Olivia event included Sofia Richie, Huma Abedin and Nicky Hilton Rothschild.
